After an evening that saw the blue-and-white athletes competing on multiple fronts, today’s schedule includes no events for San Marino competitors at the 20th Mediterranean Games.
The athletes are currently focused on training as they prepare for tomorrow’s competitions.
The first to return to action will be Nicole Conti. The San Marino equestrian, riding Jappeloup, brought the San Marino flag back to the Mediterranean Games for the first time in 21 years, since the country’s only previous appearance at Almería 2005.
The young San Marino pairing put in a strong showing, displaying great potential. In the individual qualifiers held yesterday, from late afternoon into the evening, only a few small mistakes crept in. There was a single error in the first round, followed by two fences down in the second, as nightfall completely changed the conditions. In total, Nicole Conti and Jappeloup accumulated 12 penalty points, finishing 33rd out of 45 pairs at the start. They will return to competition tomorrow in the late afternoon for the final.
Track and field will also return to the spotlight tomorrow with Alessandra Gasparelli, who, after competing in the 100m yesterday, will take on the 200m heats in an attempt to secure a place in the final. Competing in the same event will be Alessandro Gasperoni, the most recent San Marino athlete to make his debut at the Mediterranean Games.
Meanwhile, yesterday evening marked the end of the road for San Marino’s table tennis competitors in Taranto: in the round of 16 of the men’s singles tournament, Lorenzo Ragni was defeated 0-4 by Algeria’s Stephan Ouaiche (8-11, 6-11, 4-11, 6-11), bringing his participation in the competition to a close.
