Regency race: names of Giovagnoli and Casali emerge for next term

Speculation grows in San Marino over who will succeed Captains Regent Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva, in office until 1 October.

The race for the Regency is starting to heat up. Whispers are beginning to circulate in San Marino’s political circles about possible successors to Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva, the current Captains Regent, who took office on 1 April and are due to complete their term on 1 October. The institutional deadline is already set: the traditional investiture ceremony for the new Heads of State will take place precisely on that date.

According to political rumours doing the rounds, the names gaining traction are those of Gerardo Giovagnoli, a member of the Party of Socialists and Democrats, and William Casali, a councillor for the San Marino Christian Democratic Party.

At this stage, it should be stressed, these remain hypotheses and speculation, not officially formalised candidacies. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the two names are confirmed by their respective parties’ governing bodies and within the balance of the ruling coalition.

Should the rumours prove accurate, a PSD-PDCS pairing would take the highest office in the Republic for the six-month term from 1 October 2026 to 1 April 2027. Before that, however, the necessary political and institutional steps will need to be completed.
