San Marino’s economy and employment are growing, but the number of people classified as unemployed is also on the rise. That is the figure highlighted by the Sammarinese Workers’ Union (Unione Sammarinese Lavoratori, USL), commenting on the latest statistical bulletin.
According to the union, behind the many positive indicators — from the growing number of businesses to the rise in employees — lies a worrying trend: compared with June of last year, there are 72 more people immediately available for work who are unemployed, with the rate climbing from 2.25% to 2.68%.
The phenomenon also affects people with high levels of education. Among those looking for work, USL points out, 32.5% hold a high school diploma and 28.6% a university degree. For the union, this confirms that the labour market remains “too closed”, and should do more to make the most of different skills and educational backgrounds.
Particular attention is being paid to young people, who according to USL should be given greater opportunities to build a satisfying career path without being forced to leave San Marino. At the same time, the union calls for the experience of older workers not to be wasted, especially those who lose their jobs in the years leading up to retirement.
On the demographic front, USL also hopes for the swift approval of the bill amending Law 129 of 2022, while stressing the need for further measures. Finally, the union has expressed its willingness to open a dialogue on work, skills and employment, issues it considers central to the country’s future.
