The public training-competition course for the recruitment of Gendarmes, Guards and Officers into the Republic’s three police corps is now open. Selection is limited to a maximum of 50 participants. Online applications must be submitted by 6 p.m. on 28 September 2026.
Notice no. 6/2026/CCP has been published for the public training-competition course aimed at recruiting personnel for the three police corps of the Republic of San Marino: the Gendarmerie Corps (Corpo della Gendarmeria), the Uniformed Unit of the Guard of the Rock (Nucleo Uniformato della Guardia di Rocca) and the Civil Police Corps (Corpo di Polizia Civile).
The training-competition course is open to a maximum of 50 participants. Should the number of candidates who pass the preliminary requirements and physical tests exceed 50, a ranking list will be drawn up to determine access to the course, based on the pre-selection criteria set out in the notice.
The process will lead to a final ranking list valid for three years, which may be used during that period for recruitment into the three police corps according to operational needs and available resources.
Applications must be submitted exclusively online through the Istanze On Line (IOL) platform, accessible via the gov.sm portal, by 6 p.m. on Monday, 28 September 2026. A processing fee of €50 is required to take part.
Who can apply
The training-competition course is open to San Marino citizens and residents of the Republic who meet the requirements set out in the notice.
Key requirements include a secondary school diploma, compliance with the established age limits, possession of a category B driving licence and, for entry into service, a category A licence, as well as the physical and psychological fitness, height and visual acuity standards required for service in the police corps.
Applicants must already attach, at the time of application, a medical certificate confirming fitness for sports activity, including a stress test, which is required to take part in the physical tests. For entry into service, actual residency within San Marino territory is also required.
Physical tests and pre-selection
The first phase consists of a series of physical tests, which candidates must pass in order to proceed with the selection process. These tests include running, strength and jumping exercises, as well as tasks performed at height and in conditions of limited visibility.
Failure to pass even a single test results in exclusion from the rest of the process.
If more than 50 candidates are admitted, a pre-selection ranking list will be drawn up. Scoring will take into account, among other elements, diploma grades, any academic or specialisation qualifications, professional and service experience, and certain operational certifications, including BLSD/PBLSD certification, firearms handling qualifications and proof of foreign language proficiency at B2 level or above.
Training course and examinations
Successful candidates will take part in a training course organised by the Office for Labour and Active Policies (ULPA), lasting a total of 60 hours.
To proceed to the next stages of selection, candidates must attend at least 48 hours — 80% of the course — and pass a final examination consisting of a multiple-choice questionnaire covering the topics addressed during training.
The course enrolment fee is €300, payable by the participant.
Once the course is completed, candidates will move on to the examination stage, which is divided into three modules: general knowledge, English language and IT skills; specific knowledge and competencies; and cross-cutting and aptitude-based skills.
A maximum of 70 points is awarded across these tests. To qualify and be included in the final ranking list, candidates must score at least 42 out of 70 points. In addition to the test results, an assessment of qualifications held by successful candidates will also be taken into account, worth up to a further 30 points.
Ranking list and initial appointments
At the end of the process, a final merit-based ranking list will be drawn up, remaining valid for three years and usable for further recruitment as well as for any temporary assignments within the three corps.
The top 12 candidates will be offered permanent employment or enlistment: 5 as Gendarmes in the Gendarmerie Corps, 2 as Guards in the Uniformed Unit of the Guard of the Rock, and 5 as Officers in the Civil Police Corps.
Salaries will correspond to level 5 of the pay scale applicable to the police corps. A twelve-month probationary period is also envisaged, during which successful candidates will hold, for hierarchical purposes only, the rank of “Cadet” and must attend theoretical and practical training courses, including outside San Marino’s territory.
