San Marino’s political community has come together in remembrance of Matteo Fiorini, who passed away at just 48 years old after a long illness. News of the former Captain Regent’s death has prompted profound grief among the country’s institutions and political forces, who in these hours have been remembering above all his human qualities and his sense of public service.
Expressing the nation’s closeness to the family are, first and foremost, the Captains Regent Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva, who describe him as a figure of «extraordinary human, political and institutional standing». In their message, they recall the dedication, sense of statesmanship and respect for the community that marked Fiorini’s career — a commitment that led him to hold the country’s highest institutional offices: he served twice as Captain Regent, as well as Secretary of State for Territory and Environment and as a member of the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale).
Adding its voice to the tributes is Libera, which remembers Fiorini as «a man of extraordinary depth, even before being a politician». The movement stresses that, even amid disagreements over political positions, mutual respect and esteem never faltered, describing him as someone driven by a sincere passion for San Marino and a deep culture, with a particular love for singer-songwriter music.
An engineer who spent much of his professional career at SIT, Fiorini began his political journey with Alleanza Popolare, later continuing it with Repubblica Futura and serving three terms in the Grand and General Council.
His death leaves a deep void in the political and institutional life of the Titan republic. The messages arriving in these hours convey heartfelt condolences to his wife, his daughter and the entire family.
