Mattarella to Leo XIV: «Closeness to every state instils hope for the future»

Italian President Sergio Mattarella sends a message to Pope Leo XIV as San Marino marks a century of diplomatic ties with the Holy See.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has also turned his attention to Pope Leo XIV’s visit to San Marino, on the very day the Titan marks the centenary of diplomatic relations with the Holy See.

In a message sent to the Pontiff, Mattarella underlined the significance of the anniversary and the relationship built over time around peace, human dignity and the common good — principles that, the Head of State recalled, also underpin the Italian Constitution.

A passage was dedicated specifically to San Marino, a Republic with deep Christian roots and long-standing institutional traditions. According to Mattarella, Leo XIV’s presence represents a moment of great significance for the authorities and citizens of San Marino, particularly given the Pope’s constant call to work for peace and harmony among peoples.

The message also touched on the current international scenario. Faced with a world order increasingly exposed to the “law of the strongest,” Mattarella highlighted the value of the Pontiff’s closeness to different communities: “Your ceaseless closeness to the communities of every state, large or small, instils hope and confidence in the future.”

The President concluded by conveying to Leo XIV his esteem and “the affection of the entire Italian people.”
