New sightings have reignited concern over the presence of wolves on Mount Titano. As reported by San Marino RTV, several specimens were filmed at night near the Multieventi Sport Domus in Serravalle, while in Cailungo a resident has come forward describing how a wolf allegedly killed her cat.
The woman shared on social media that Celeste, her ten-year-old cat, rarely strayed far from home and is believed to have been attacked right outside the gate of her house. She urged fellow pet owners to be more vigilant, especially at night.
The incident has reopened debate over the disappearance of cats reported across the territory, although these cases cannot automatically be attributed to wolves. According to San Marino RTV, Apas (the animal protection association) is urging caution, while noting that more than ten cats have gone missing over the past year from a colony living in open countryside.
The San Marino Naturalistic Centre (Centro Naturalistico Sammarinese) also points out that cats allowed to roam freely in the evening and at night are more vulnerable to predation. The latest monitoring surveys estimate around ten wolves currently present on Mount Titano, a figure that has decreased compared with previous counts.
For now, the Secretariat for Territory is maintaining its monitoring approach, relying on camera traps and night-vision thermal imaging. No attacks on people have been reported so far, but the new sightings are heightening concern, particularly among those who keep dogs and cats in areas frequented by wildlife.
