Laurent Nunez remains in his post, despite submitting his resignation following the violent protests that swept France over the weekend. Emmanuel Macron rejected it in order to ensure continuity in the leadership of the security forces during the crisis.
The interior minister acknowledged that in some cities police “lost control,” admitting there had been a “lack of foresight” in preparations. He explained that he had offered to resign “because I felt responsible for everything that happened.”
Macron criticised the shortcomings in the handling of public order and asked the minister to shed light on the gaps in planning and intelligence that led to the violence.
The president has also tasked Nunez with introducing new operational procedures for the security forces called upon to deal with the protests.
