Modigliani Foundation launched with over 6,000 documents and backing from San Marino RTV

A new foundation in Rome will preserve and study the artist's archive, with San Marino RTV among its supporters after producing a ten-part docuseries on his life.

Photographs, manuscripts, sketches, personal belongings and testimonies. More than 6,000 documents reconstructing the life and work of Amedeo Modigliani, gathered over decades of research, now form the core of the new Fondazione Archivi Legali Amedeo Modigliani (Amedeo Modigliani Legal Archives Foundation). Established in 2026, it will be presented on Monday, October 19, at 11 a.m., in Rome, in the Refectory Hall of the Chamber of Deputies Library, at Via del Seminario 76.

The new Foundation was created with the support of Geko Gold Holding, led by collector Marco Quadrelli. Alongside the Research Committee, the Modigliani Academy is also taking shape, dedicated to education and interdisciplinary exchange. Its programme includes study trips, workshops, summer courses, master’s programmes, conferences and publications, developed in collaboration with universities and cultural institutions.

Also supporting the project is San Marino RTV, which has already dedicated a ten-part docuseries to the Livorno-born painter, produced with the collaboration of Christian Parisot, the family’s archivist and president of the Foundation’s Research Centre. The series featured contributions from, among others, Paolo Mieli, Corrado Augias, Riccardo Scamarcio and Tomaso Montanari.

The Foundation will be responsible for preserving the collection, studying it, and making it more accessible. Planned activities include cataloguing and digitising the materials, supporting research, and updating Modigliani’s catalogue raisonnĂ©, compiled in six volumes authored by Parisot.

Speakers at the presentation will include Foundation president Marco Quadrelli, secretary general Giancarlo Graziani, Christian Parisot, and San Marino RTV’s general director Roberto Sergio. Opening remarks will be given by the Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Giorgio Mulè, and the Undersecretary for Culture, Gianpiero Cannella. The event will be moderated by writer and broadcaster Roberto Giacobbo.

For the occasion, the Carnet ArmĂ©nien, featuring 16 drawings by Modigliani, will be on display, along with one of the artist’s pencils and a diary containing a menu from 1914. Three works will also be exhibited: the Portrait of Casimir HĂ©buterne (1919), the Portrait of Jeanne HĂ©buterne (1917), and Cariatide Obliqua (1911).

The collection’s origins trace back to the work of Jeanne Modigliani, the painter’s daughter with Jeanne HĂ©buterne. Starting in 1939, she began searching across Italy and France for testimonies and materials related to her father’s life. This research led, in 1958, to the publication of Modigliani senza leggenda (Modigliani Without Legend), a book that challenged many of the myths that had grown up around the artist. In June 1983, Jeanne founded the association dedicated to the Amedeo Modigliani Legal Archives in Paris, entrusting Parisot with the role of archivist.
