Gendarmerie: Zuccarelli tipped to succeed Faraone as commander

The State Congress has put forward Colonel Paolo Zuccarelli as the new head of the Gendarmerie, with the Grand and General Council now set to examine the proposal.

The State Congress (Congresso di Stato) is backing Paolo Zuccarelli as the new commander of the Gendarmerie. The proposal, formalized on October 13, now moves to the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale) for review.

The change in leadership follows General Maurizio Faraone’s decision to end his term early. Zuccarelli is also set to be promoted to the rank of one-star general, pending the related procedures to be completed by the Military Congress.

A colonel in the Carabinieri, Zuccarelli has served as legal advisor to the Joint Special Forces Operations Command. At the CoESPU training center in Vicenza, he coordinated advanced training programs for foreign security forces.

The choice follows the direction outlined on September 11 before the Foreign Affairs Committee by Secretary of State Luca Beccari, who had announced that Faraone’s successor would be sought from within the Corps.
