The pontiff was operated on at Rome's Policlinico Gemelli after a routine check-up revealed a nodule on his lung.

Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery this afternoon at Rome’s Policlinico Gemelli to remove a nodule on his lung, discovered during a routine check-up.

The Vatican press office confirmed that the procedure was entrusted to the thoracic surgery team led by Professor Stefano Margaritora.

The pontiff arrived at the hospital by car together with his personal physician, Luigi Carbone. He got out of the vehicle unassisted in the forecourt, where he was greeted by hospital officials.

Calm and smiling, he gave a wave to the crowd that had gathered since the morning, without stopping.

Further updates are expected this evening, the Vatican announced.
