EU association agreement: San Marino set to sign on 19 October, capping a decade of talks

San Marino is preparing to sign its Association Agreement with the European Union on 19 October, closing ten years of negotiations.

The signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union is now just days away, set for 19 October. For San Marino, it marks a milestone that will close ten years of negotiations and open a new chapter in relations with Brussels.

The date was communicated to the Foreign Affairs Secretariat following the green light given in July. The calendar was agreed upon with the authorities of San Marino, Andorra and the European Union.

“This will finally be the moment when we sign the agreement,” said Secretary of State Luca Beccari, recalling the long process of technical and political negotiations that led to this point.

Following the signing, San Marino will need to begin its ratification process, starting with a review by the Foreign Affairs Committee before moving to the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale).

Once ratification is complete, the Republic will be able to request the provisional application of the agreement. According to Beccari, this is expected to take effect in January or, at the latest, February 2027, depending on administrative timelines.

“The agreement is not just an endpoint, but also a starting point,” the Secretary emphasized.

The goal is to open up new avenues for dialogue and cooperation with the EU, while preserving San Marino’s identity and sovereignty.
