Anyone holding the right driving licence and looking for a public-sector job now has a new avenue to explore. The Autonomous State Company for Public Services (AASS) has opened applications for the training course leading to qualification for bus driver duties within the Transport Division, a pathway set out under Article 7 of the trade union agreement of 12 June 2026 as a specific requirement for recruiting staff to drive buses.

Participation in the course is free of charge and does not involve any enrolment fee. Applications must be submitted between August 31 and September 8, 2026, and must arrive by 12:00 noon on September 8: requests received after this deadline will not be considered.

Who can take part

The course is open to those who meet the requirements set out in the trade union agreement. Among the main criteria are holding a valid category D driving licence with KD certification and an educational qualification no higher than lower secondary school, or having completed compulsory schooling as required by law: those holding a vocational qualification diploma or higher may instead register on the relevant employment lists for the driver role through a different channel. In addition, any further requirements set out under current regulations for access to the corresponding role profile also apply.

How the course is structured

The course runs for a total of 15 hours, divided into 5 hours of theoretical training and 10 hours of practical training, and will be held over three days — Saturday 12, 19 and 26 September 2026 — from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, at the AASS Transport Service headquarters in Via delle Carrare 42, Murata. The practical component uses vehicles belonging to the company’s fleet or vehicles with equivalent characteristics.

The programme includes lessons on the organisation of the public transport service, the duties and responsibilities of drivers, road and passenger safety, pre-service checks, vehicle handling and manoeuvring, and emergency management. Attendance is mandatory: a maximum of three hours’ absence is permitted, beyond which the candidate will not be admitted to the final exam.

Final exam and qualification

At the end of the course, candidates who have completed all the required hours will take part in the final qualification exam, consisting of a theoretical multiple-choice test and a practical driving test involving vehicle operations and manoeuvres. The outcome is graded as either “qualified” or “not qualified”.

Those who complete the course in full and pass the exam will be issued a certificate of qualification for bus driver duties, valid as a requirement for staff recruitment. One important caveat, however, as the company specifies: admission to and participation in the course do not confer any right to employment or to placement within the role profile, which remain subject to the procedures and additional requirements set out under current regulations.

How to apply

Applications must be sent by email, via the T-Notice service, to re.azienda.servizi@aass.sm, with the subject line “Domanda di partecipazione al corso di idoneità per Autista” (Application to join the driver qualification course). The message must include the applicant’s full name, date and place of birth, ISS code, citizenship, place of residence, phone number and email address, confirmation of holding a valid category D licence with KD certification, and a declaration of having completed compulsory schooling. Applicants must also attach a copy of a valid identity document (front and back), the D licence, the KD certification, and documentation proving completion of compulsory schooling.

Full details are set out in Educational Regulation No. 1/2026 published by AASS. The deadline for submitting applications is set at 12:00 noon on September 8, 2026.
