A three-year partnership between San Marino’s Civil Protection department and Emilia-Romagna’s environmental agency Arpae will strengthen hydrometeorological risk prevention and develop joint initiatives to address climate change. This is set out in the agreement recently signed by the head of Civil Protection, Pietro Falcioni, and Arpae’s director general, Paolo Ferrecchi.
The agreement focuses on training and the development of joint study and research projects, with particular attention to preventing risks linked to weather events. A significant part of the collaboration will concern climate change, addressed not only through analysis but also via data collection and sharing, and the search for shared strategies.
“A significant part of the agreement concerns the shared study of climate change, which involves not only analysis of the phenomenon but also cooperation on research, data collection and sharing, and the identification of possible joint strategies to address its effects,” the statement reads. “The goal is to foster greater understanding of the phenomenon and promote coordinated action for environmental protection and the reduction of risks linked to climate transformations.”
Another key point of the agreement concerns the experimental Functional Centre of San Marino, recently established and dedicated to assessing and managing meteorological, hydrogeological and hydraulic risk. Arpae will support San Marino’s Civil Protection in its development, offering its expertise and experience.
“The collaboration will aim to strengthen monitoring and forecasting capabilities for weather events and related phenomena, through the sharing of technical expertise, methodologies, data and operational tools,” the statement continues.
The joint effort should also help improve analysis and warning systems, with the aim of identifying potential critical situations more quickly and making Civil Protection interventions more effective.
“In particular, this support can contribute to improving analysis and warning systems, enabling faster identification of potentially critical situations and, as a result, more effective Civil Protection interventions,” the statement explains.
Finally, the agreement aims to consolidate technical cooperation between San Marino and Emilia-Romagna, establishing shared procedures and operational methods. “The initiative also represents an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the technical structures of the two territories and to develop shared procedures for emergency prevention and management.”
