San Marino in mourning as Matteo Fiorini dies at 48

Former Captain Regent and Secretary of State, remembered for his institutional commitment and quiet, approachable character.

San Marino is mourning Matteo Fiorini, who passed away this afternoon at the age of 48 after a long battle with illness. The news has stirred deep sorrow across the Titan, where Fiorini was known not only for his long-standing political and institutional commitment, but also for his gentle character, fairness and willingness to help others.

Over the course of his career he held some of the Republic’s most important offices. He served twice as Captain Regent (Capitano Reggente): first during the 2011-2012 term, and later from 1 October 2017 to 1 April 2018, alongside Enrico Carattoni.

It was during this second term that he showed particular attention to social issues and to society’s most vulnerable members. Among the notable moments of that Regency was a visit to Lampedusa, where he met with workers and organizations engaged daily in welcoming migrants.

Fiorini had also served as Secretary of State and was a member of the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale), taking part in various phases of San Marino’s political life with a commitment always grounded in respect for the country’s institutions.

With his passing, the Republic loses one of the leading figures of public life in recent years — and, above all, a man who had earned esteem well beyond political divides.

Matteo Fiorini is survived by his wife Marina and daughter Alice, around whom the whole of San Marino’s community now gathers in shared grief.
