The fourth summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games is drawing closer, set to take place in Dakar from 31 October to 13 November 2026. It will be the first time the youth Olympic event has been held on the African continent. Representing San Marino will be Margherita Gregoroni in swimming and Greta San Martini in athletics. The two athletes were received this morning by the Secretary of State for Sport, Rossano Fabbri, together with Private Secretary Alessandro Mancini, in the presence of CONS (San Marino National Olympic Committee) president Christian Forcellini, Secretary General Eros Bologna, chef de mission Lucia Castiglioni, and coaches Luca Corsetti and Massimo Meca.
“Our very best wishes go to both athletes,” said President Forcellini. “We are proud of the journey they have made so far, made possible thanks to the work of the federations and coaches, but above all thanks to their own sacrifices and the constant support of their families. The Youth Olympics will be an important test for both of them and a precious opportunity for growth.”
Secretary of State for Sport Rossano Fabbri stressed that “Dakar must represent an important milestone in both their personal and sporting journeys. We hope it will be an experience that enriches them in every way and leaves them with valuable lessons for the future.”
For Secretary General Eros Bologna, “beyond wishing both athletes the best of luck, we hope they can carry San Marino’s name high and represent our flag at its best on the international stage.”
The two San Marino athletes will reach Senegal at different times. The first to depart will be Margherita Gregoroni, who will fly from Bologna to Dakar on Friday, 30 October, where she will be met by chef de mission Lucia Castiglioni. The following day she will march as San Marino’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio. Gregoroni will compete in the pool on 2 November in the 100m freestyle, on 4 November in the 200m individual medley, and on 6 November in the 200m freestyle. Greta San Martini, meanwhile, will arrive in Senegal on 4 November and will compete in the triple jump on Sunday, 8 November.
