San Marino completes accession to international workplace safety conventions

San Marino has completed its accession to the International Labour Organization’s conventions on workers’ health and safety. The final step took place today, 22 October, in Geneva, in the presence of the Secretary of State for Labour Alessandro Bevitori and the ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo.

With the ratification of Convention 155, together with its related Protocol, and Convention 187, the Republic has now completed ratification of all ten fundamental conventions of the Organization. These instruments focus on accident prevention, the protection of health and the continuous improvement of working conditions.

The process, first launched in the previous legislature by the then Secretary of State for Labour Teodoro Lonfernini, now moves into the phase of practical implementation. The goal is to strengthen inspections, update protective measures and ensure risks are identified promptly, through cooperation between institutions, trade unions and employers.

This is an issue that directly affects small and medium-sized enterprises, which often lack dedicated in-house prevention staff. Dialogue among the parties will need to translate into proper training, regular checks and day-to-day practices capable of making workplaces safer.

“We have closed a fundamental circle, bringing our legal system to the highest standards promoted by the International Labour Organization,” Bevitori said. “The right to a workplace free from danger is a non-negotiable cornerstone. Today’s signature is not a formal milestone, but a programmatic commitment to work with trade unions and employers to build concrete, widespread and lasting protections for every worker.”

Houngbo praised the Secretary of State for honouring the commitment made and underlined the significance of San Marino’s accession: “San Marino’s accession carries great significance, above all as an example for other States.”

The delegation also included Marcello Beccari, Ambassador and Permanent Representative in Geneva, private secretary Steven Ciacci, and officials Laura Ferretti and Anita Dedic.

The mission continued at CERN, with a visit focused on scientific research and technology transfer. Bevitori and the delegation were welcomed by Oliver Brüning, Director for Accelerators and Technology, and by Giovanni Anelli, Head of the Industry, Procurement and Knowledge Transfer department. After signing the Golden Book and attending a presentation of CERN’s activities, the Sammarinese representatives visited the ATLAS experiment, accompanied by the scientific collaboration’s coordinator, Ludovico Pontecorvo.
