The investigation into alleged money laundering involving Giochi del Titano and the San Marino-flagged vessel struck in the Black Sea were two of the main topics addressed by the Secretary of State for Finance, Marco Gatti, during his address to the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale).
On the judicial case surrounding Giochi del Titano, Gatti reiterated the Government’s conviction that the company bears no direct responsibility for the alleged offences at the centre of the investigation.
The Secretary also confirmed that General Manager Salvatore Caronia has voluntarily suspended himself from his duties. Interim general management has been entrusted to Ivan Frisoni, while the role of managing director is, for the time being, not being exercised.
The State Congress (Congresso di Stato) has requested an independent audit to further examine the situation and assess a possible organisational restructuring of the company, which has become the focus of the criminal investigation.
Gatti then reported on the merchant vessel flying the San Marino flag that was struck in the Black Sea while in Romanian territorial waters. There were 12 crew members on board the ship.
The Secretary of State confirmed full cooperation with Romanian authorities in the inquiries into the incident.
Gatti also noted the dangerous situation in the Black Sea area, where around 80 ships are believed to have been struck over the past six months, underscoring the risks facing merchant shipping in the region.
During the session, the Secretary also updated the Council on the institutional mission to Bangkok for meetings of the International Monetary Fund, during which the energy issue was also discussed. According to Gatti, investments in renewable energy sources planned for 2026-2027 should enable San Marino to cover around 30% of its national energy needs through domestic production.
